Rembrandt – the Mature & Late Works 1642-69
Following the completion of the Night Watch in 1642 and the death of his beloved wife, Saskia, Rembrandt entered a phase of introspection, where much of the Baroque drama and ostentation was replaced by stillness and a search for a different pictorial language, without his almost obsessive quest for an extreme liveliness of figures. His exploration of the use of light and colour altered, but most noticeably his previously fine, linear brushwork changed to one that was much freer, broader and expressive. After a decade, or so when etching was the priority, innovating and producing prints of astonishing quality, Rembrandt then produced some of his most memorable paintings, from scriptural narratives such as, Jacob Blessing the Children of Joseph and Bathsheba to the Classical, Lucretia.
